According to IEA Director Fatih Birol, In today’s economy, the renewable energy sector is crucial and not just for achieving climate targets. (Development of Green Hydrogen)
Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), Housing, and Urban Affairs, predicted that 1,000 oil marketing companies (OMCs) outlets nationwide would sell petrol blended with 20% ethyl alcohol, also known as “E20,” in a short period.

Speaking at the “India’s Role in the Future of Energy” event, which was sponsored by G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant in New Delhi, Puri said that E20 fuel is already being dispensed at 600 retail outlets.

Although the MoPNG has not yet achieved its goal of scaling it across the entire country by 2025, the concept is gaining popularity and people are becoming accustomed to it, he said.

He said that by moving through with its plans for the manufacturing of ethanol from commodities like sugarcane and maize, among others, the government had addressed the “chicken or egg” conundrum.

Puri stated at the event, “We are pushing for a global biofuel alliance during our G20 presidency, which not only includes countries like Brazil but also opens it up to others as well.”

The Hydrogen Mission’s goals of five million metric tonnes (mmt) of green hydrogen annually “looked ambitious and is ambitious,” the Union minister remarked at first.

The minister is confident that this objective might even be exceeded if the sectors get their “act together” based on his quarterly review meetings with stakeholders.

He mentioned the government’s provision of six facilities where six distinct ministries will each examine hydrogen production, such as the steel ministry separately, the MoPNG separately, and so forth.

Puri suggested that in addition to incentives provided by the Hydrogen Mission, which has a budget of Rs 19,744 crore, the private sector is also actively pursuing green hydrogen.

According to Puri, there are private firms that have received billions of dollars in outside investment, filed for land and manufacturing facilities for the manufacture of green hydrogen, and contracted the supply of green ammonia to other countries.

Despite the effort, the manufacturing of green hydrogen has its share of difficulties, according to the environmental portal Mongabay. The earliest adopters of green hydrogen are likely to be Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Odisha, several of which have water shortages. For electrolysis, approximately 9 kg of water is needed for every kg of hydrogen.

“The production of green hydrogen requires vast amounts of resources: land, water, and renewable energy,” according to a report by Corporate Europe Observatory. Conflicts over water and land usage, human rights abuses, energy poverty, and the delay of the decarbonization of the electricity grid in developing nations can all be exacerbated by this.

The director of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol, stated on the same occasion that “no country is not looking at hydrogen very closely” because of its rapid growth. India was dubbed a “hydrogen superpower” by him.

Regarding trade protectionist strategies used in some nations, he suggested that success relies on the amount of hydrogen needed, the cost of production, and the level of entrepreneurship in each nation.

In addition to assisting us in achieving our climate goals, the renewable energy industry is now crucial to our economy and cannot be disregarded, according to Birol.

He added that the International Energy Agency (IEA) would soon release research on the idea of Lifestyle for the Environment (LiFE), which India had introduced at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change’s 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26).
