Gujarat Launches Hydrogen Valley Project to Establish Value Chain

Gujarat has started the eagerly awaited Hydrogen Valley Project to create a localized hydrogen value chain that benefits many end markets or applications in the fields of energy, manufacturing, and transportation. On April 21, 2023, iCreate, the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, and the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India together hosted the inaugural stakeholder consultation meeting. In addition to the significance of research and innovation in advancing the hydrogen economy, the symposium also covered the principles for establishing Hydrogen Valley Innovation clusters.

The project is a component of India’s attempts to create clean Hydrogen Valleys by 2030 and lower the GDP’s emission intensity by 45% by that same year. India will work to create clean Hydrogen Valleys by 2030 as part of the Gujarat Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster. By developing capacity and competence for its production, delivery, and use cases quickly and efficiently, the project will support research on novel hydrogen technologies. Meetings of dialogue have been scheduled regularly to assess prospects and quickly seize them while maximising shared advantages.

Numerous businesses, state PSUs, and R&D institutions are participating in Gujarat’s Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster. The initiative is anticipated to produce several opportunities for stakeholders, particularly in the MSME sector, and to lead to the creation of new job opportunities soon. The project seeks to secure commercial viability and competitive end-use applications by unlocking the cost-competitiveness of all hydrogen applications through ground-breaking technological advancements paired with their widespread adoption.

The Hydrogen Valley Project is important in meeting the rising energy needs while simultaneously accomplishing sector-wide decarbonization, maintaining energy security, and promoting sustainable growth. The project has the enormous potential to both greatly advance the goals of the global climate change movement and fuel India’s future growth and requirements. All parties involved share a shared goal in collaborating to make India’s Hydrogen Valleys a success. The meeting’s outcome would be the submission of an Expression of Interest for the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the establishment of the Gujarat-based Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster (HVIC) to the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.
