Gujarat Aims to Produce 8M T/Y of H2 by 2035

According to Mr. Balvantsinh Rajput, Gujarat’s Cabinet Minister for Industries, Gujarat wants to produce 8 million t/yr of green hydrogen within the next 10 to 12 years, becoming a “global powerhouse of green hydrogen manufacturing capacity.”

Further Mr. Rajput added at the Gandhinagar B20 business summit that the government is assisting its businesses in making the changeover to renewable energy and that scaling up hydrogen, batteries, and green manufacturing is essential to the state’s aim to increase manufacturing.

Gujarat already produces 18% of India’s industrial production and 9% of the country’s GDP. According to Rajput, the state plans to increase its economy to $500 billion by 2026–2027 and $1 trillion by 2030–32, while increasing the manufacturing sector’s contribution to GDP from 35 percent to more than 50 percent over the next ten years.

Gujarat should be able to meet its hydrogen ambitions and encourage the green manufacturing of fertilisers, steel, and chemicals thanks to India’s hydrogen plan, which was announced this month. According to Rajput, the state has “ample availability of wasteland” that can be utilised for the generation of renewable hydrogen and ammonia as well as wind and solar energy.

According to Balvantsinh Rajput, Gujarat is India’s primary export hub, carrying 40% of the nation’s cargo from its 49 ports. Rajput did not specify whether he anticipates Gujurat to export downstream products or hydrogen and ammonia shipments.

In a few years, the 920 km2 Dholera Special Investment Region (SIR) of the state will become a major center for manufacturing, he said. Even though it seems like progress has been slow in the recently established city, businesses like the Indian conglomerate Reliance are considering operations there.
